The guys picked up where they left off discussing the Netflixification of the Church and how the on demand nature of streaming has impacted the way people are engaging with the Church.

  • Streaming Church Content due to convenience – probably not a good motive
  • Streaming due to life circumstances and need – a periodic necessity and gift but not long-term solution

The pandemic has given us a gift-in that we can clarify with our congregation what does it mean to be with the church.

We can and should evaluate everything we are doing and help our folks assess their engagement with it.

Our goal, as Pastors is to help our congregation understand the value of embodied presence (gathered worship)

  • Preach on the value of embodied presence
  • Connect with your congregation
  • Elevate connection through groups
  • Lead others to engage in shepherding along with you – “the one another’s”
  • Restructure the embodied presence by changing your liturgy

Jimbo does a solid favor for Bob and Kyle of the Replant team and then they guys get down to the serious business reflecting on trends in the church with our good friend, Keelan Cook, from the Union Baptist Association.

  • Church gatherings have fundamentally changed through the use of media (online, drive-in, Facebook, Youtube etc.)
  • The “Netflixification” of church is occuring, people are watching worship services when it fits in their schedule – not when the church is live streaming the in person gathering
  • There are positives and negatives with this practice (homebound, special needs populations)
  • Consumerism and Self-focused decisions are on the rise
  • “Embodied Practice” = we expect you to be present for gathered worship is going to be a tension point for us as we moved forward.
  • We have to evaluate every piece of media we put on social media and ask: “Who is this for?”
    • What churches put online should shift to be a primary means of outreach, shared by church members
    • Pastors and Leaders will need to work hard to transition their folks back to the gathering as a practice.

Check out part 2 next week.

The boys are back picking up where they left off-talking transitions in ministry, specifically how Jimbo became a “denominational guy” and why. Check it out as we discuss the importance of learning, serving and letting God lead you on a journey in ministry.

How did you begin the path to becoming a denominational man?

  • There was a key moment when I remember my passion quickening after having a conversation and helping a local pastor.
  • Networking and Partnership has always been important to me and something that I practiced from the early days of ministry.
  • I contacted my Association as soon as I moved to Florida and said I’m here to learn and serve.
  • I began to ask my Associational Leader questions about Replanting and Revitalization, all the time!
  • I had the idea and passion to help others not make the mistakes and experiencing the pain I had as a Replanter.
  • My Associational Leader saw that passion and drive and gave me the opportunity to serve.

How did you decide you need to make the switch and transition out of Pastoring a local Replant?

  • I realized my church needed someone who could give more than I was able to give
  • The church needed someone with a different skill set who could take the church to a new place.
  • It was the obvious next step to me and confirmed by those around me.

An important question to ask: Are you willing to do the work (serve other pastors, churches) with no pay and little recognition?

(From Jimbo’s Mentor) There are three kinds of denominational leaders

  • They one who sees his position and as a promotion and believes he has arrived-and is immediately irrelevant.
  • The one who sees his position as a way to end or retire-and is immediately irrelevant.
  • The one who has a passion to serve pastors and churches with everything he has-be that guy.

Learn to be content with the pace of your ministry and the pace of your ministry and let God direct both.

In this episode Jimbo talks about his transition away from his role as a full time Pastor to full work with the Replant team of the North American Mission Board. As they unpack Jimbo’s story listen in on some of the key insights as you might consider a transition yourself.

  • Evaluate your call on a regular basis
  • Never abandon your call because ministry is difficult
  • Consider “catalytic” moments that reveal your passion or changing passion
  • Examine your heart before the Lord: “Is this a distraction?” “Is there any selfish ambition?”
  • Consult your mentors and ask them for feedback
  • Exercise caution not to “over spiritualize” the decision
  • Discuss the decision with your spouse
  • Prayerfully consider that someone else may be better suited to lead the church forward

Sometimes the work of Replanting a church can be destructive to you-here are some of the warning signs.

  • Difficulty in your marriage or family
  • You are spiritual dry and your relationship with God has gone cold
  • You are engaging in sin or destructive habits

This week the guys welcome to the bootcamp a long time Replanting friend, Pastor Mark Hallock, of the Calvary family of Churches in Denver Colorado.  The guys spend time talking about how to be encouraged as a Pastor during this difficult season we find ourselves in.

Key takeaways:

  • Every person needs more encouragement than they get!
  • Pastor-you must stay encouraged yourself!
    • Think on Godly things (Philippians 4:8)
    • Guard against the overindulgence of ministry and media
    • Get outside in God’s creation!
    • Spend time in personal worship
    • Engage in edifying conversations
    • Spend time in prayer
  • Encourage those around you
    • Be intentional and consistent in your communication with your leaders
    • Practice Macro and Micro Shepherding
      • Micro-one to one (texts, phone calls etc.)
      • Macro-entire congregation
    • Pray for and feed the flock God’s word
    • Get back to the basics of pastoring your people
    • Trust the Lord and ask him to give you Joy

Start the Barnabas Challenge: encourage three people everyday. This will transform your congregation-it is powerful when a church becomes an encouraging church.

The guys are wrapping up their discussion on the Six Irreducible Minimums for 2021 and offer some insights on the frigid cold weather, valentines dining with your spouse, year-round-shorts guy, and Jimbo helps clear up Bob’s misunderstanding of  “King Cakes”  and then they get down to talking about why we need to depend upon the Lord to build his church.

This can be a difficult one for us-especially as the normal measurements of success ebb and flow, rise and fall.

  • Set your mind on the truth that regardless what happens–Jesus builds his church
  • The normal measurements are important (attendance, buildings, budgets) but they are not only measurements that are important. “Numbers aren’t everything-but they are something.”
  • Do the work of ministry: Pursuing God’s Kingdom, Preaching, Equipping, Discipling, Engaging the Community and then let God do his work at building the church.
  • Focus on your “role” or “job” as the pastor there for that season. Some plow, some plant, other water and the Lord is the one who brings the harvest!

EPISODE #73 - ENGAGE YOUR COMMUNITY

Don’t let 2021 overwhelm you, stay with the basics, the irreducible minimums of ministry and take joy in leading your congregation and loving your people.  The guys are back at it, discussing how you can excel at Engaging the Community.  (also Jimbo shares a pretty incredible story right up front)

Personal

  • To engage the community you have to love the community – to grow in your love for the community you have to be in the community
  • Get involved and go to the civic events, parades, sports events etc
  • Go to the coffee shops, diners, firehouses, feed stores-get out and be a part of the community

Interpersonal

  • Get to know the people right around your church.
  • Engage your neighborhood, invite people over for time around the firepit
  • Throw a neighborhood party
  • Set up in a coffee shop-put out a sign letting people know you are willing to pray for them.

Team

  • Engage the community together as a small group or church
  • Trunk or Treat at the Elementary School
  • Serve a youth sports team

Organizationally

  • Serve in the community as a church-get out and serve on others turf not your own
  • Cast a strong vision for your church members to engage in whatever arena they are active in
  • Serve a like minded organization
  • Serve with your city by engaging with the city leaders.

EPISODE #72 – MAKE DISCIPLES

EPISODE #72 - MAKE DISCIPLES
Loading
/

We’re back! Discussing the irreducible minimums of ministry that we can focus on as we shepherd and lead the church during this season. Our topic today-making disciples. We have been using the PITO Air Force Leadership model as a framework. Jump in and give it a listen. Have questions, feedback? We would love to hear from you, drop us a comment, email or text.

The mission according to Mark Clifton: “make disciples who make disciples who make the community a noticeably better place.

Personally

  • You have to be a disciple yourself
  • Engage in personal spiritual practices on your own
  • Prayer by Tim Keller has a great description of our soul and a boat.

Interpersonally

  • Who are your 2-3 who discipling yourself?
  • A disciple is someone who is a little further down the road than another person in their walk with Christ.
  • Discipling another person/s is a non-negotiable for us as a Pastor.

Team

  • Disciple your team as “lead disciplers” this is both in content and practice
  • Challenge/Require every team member to be a discipler of others
  • Prioritize discipling over “ministering” or doing administrative tasks.

Organizationally

  • Your church needs a Discipleship Pathway-how will you strategically lead someone to Jesus and help them grow in Jesus?
  • Just attending church and going to small group/sunday school isn’t discipleship
  • Encourage discipleship through your preaching and teaching regularly

EPISODE #71 - EQUIP LEADERS

Bob gets honest about his disdain for Tom Brady, Jimbo has a Chiefs fan in the house and we get down to discussing why equipping your people for ministry is not only a central part of your calling but a joy.  Check out the highlights below and consult the show notes for details.

The PITO lens: Personal, Interpersonal, Team, Organizational

Don’t fall into the trap of doing ministry just because you are a single staff leader. We are called to equip the saints for the work of ministry.

Personally

  • evaluate your motives
  • check your definitions of success

Interpersonally

  • make disciples-identify spiritual giftings and calling
  • Discipleship and serving are for everyone, leadership is for a few

Team

  • involve other leaders in helping you equip others in the church
  • don’t be the “lid” by limiting equipping to yourself

Organizationally

  • have an intentional strategy, process and plan
  • think broader than your context and your church, develop kingdom leaders
