This week the boys have been traveling to and fro, encouraging Pastors and Associations on the road in TX, planning some great stuff in Bob’s home town of STL and sampling the local cuisine.  But since you don’t tune in for food alone they get down to another EP on Leadership Judo, discussing the Operator Leadership Style.

Here are some of the highlights of the Operator personalities:

The Bootcamp Bros are back talking about Leadership Judo. What is leadership judo you ask? You can listen to last week’s podcast and get up to speed.

Grab your Judogi and join Jimbo and Bob in the dojo for some leadership lessons on this bootcamp as we talk about the concept of Leadership Judo.

Leadership Judo: taking the energy of an opponent and directing it away from harm to a more productive place.

VERBAL JUDO vs VERBAL KARATE (from Verbal Judo)

  • “Karate is defined by sharp, quick blows delivered with hands and feet. . . VERBAL KARATE is the lashing out, as if with the side of a calloused hand, when you snap at your spouse, your children, your employer, your employees, anyone.”
  • “Physical Judo was invented by a Dr. Kano in 1882. It was a derivative of jiujitsu, which means ‘pain.’ . . Judo means the gentle way, rather than the painful way.”

  1. All cultures want to be respected and treated with dignity, regardless of the situation. When treated with disrespect, all people want to fight and get revenge.
  2. All people would rather be asked than told what to do. To ask is a sign of respect; to tell is often a sign of disrespect.
  3. All people want to know ‘why’ they are being asked or told to do something. Telling people ‘why’ is another sign of respect.
  4. All people would rather have options than threats. Again, offering people a choice of action shows respect and allows people to save personal face.
  5. Finally, all people want a second chance to make matters right.

The “Bob” is back in town from his hiatus and joins Jimbo at the Bootcamp to discuss health. Grab an Iced tea or a water and sit right down for a bit more transparent discussion about health, diet, weight and why the boys are taking steps to trim down, shape up and how they are going about it.

Why Address your Health?

  • You might be physically uncomfortable
  • You could be endangering your future
  • Your health impacts your ministry, your family engagement and it’s a stewardship of the body God has given you.
  • You can be so busy in ministry and justify your poor health and poor habits.

Taking some practical steps

  • Get a plan and work it
  • Know your relationship with food-you have one, do you know what it is?
  • Get active and moving (walk, bike, etc.)
  • If you don’t address your health before a crisis, a crisis will cause you to have to address it.

The Bootcamp Bros are back at it and this time they are musing about what they would go back and do differently in their first 100 days as Replanters. It’s not too late if you’re into your Replanting Journey, pray, develop a plan, recruit some leaders, pick a starting point, and go for it.

Jimbo started with something “not” to do: Forget your family. You can throw yourself in so deeply that you neglect your family during the first 100 days-don’t do that!

Here are more suggestions

  • Schedule plenty of face time with the congregation to have fun and fellowship! You need connection time to develop relationships and become their pastor.
  • Identify the “influencers and powerbrokers” Note: there are directional influencers and emotional influencers-there’s a difference you need to know they difference and who they are.
  • Learn about your community buy getting a great demographics report-we suggest Double Doc-Josh Dryer, get your free demo report here. Additionally-pound the pavement-ask people in your community; “If our church were going to serve this community in some meaningful way-what would that be?”
  • Change something physical in a visible way-not the flags, the history room etc. but something that catches the eye and helps people know-things are changing.
  • Find out where God is already at work in your church and community-and then join him.
  • Celebrate and commemorate your first 100 days!

Well, we made it to 100! Thanks for being part of the Bootcamp crew-we’re thankful for you spending time with us each week as we talk about Replanting and Revitalizing Churches.

In this episode, Jimbo and Bob talk about what it means to have reached our one-hundredth episode and then take a look ahead at some potential trends we see coming down the line. Stay tuned, drop us a line and let us know what you think Replanters will face in the coming season.

  1. Children’s ministry is changing: with the COVID resurgence workers and parents are concerned about the health of their kids. Volunteers are quitting, parents are staying home, others are leaving the normative-sized churches for larger churches who have programming.
  2. Pastors need personal and professional care: a lot of our friends, pastors that we know are really really tired. Many are struggling and barely hanging on. We hear you-we see you.  Get the help you need, call the Pastor Care Hotline, it’s confidential and free: 1-844-Pastor1
  3. A trend toward more bi-vocational and co-vocational pastorates: with the challenging financial situation, with rising inflation, with decreasing church attendance and contributions, Pastors will need to figure out how to support themselves and their families. Here’s an upside-if as a Pastor you need to say some difficult things to help a church move forward, earning a living outside of the church may free you up to say what needs to be said.
  4. An increasing need for churches to help other churches: there is a rising need for churches to assist and collaborate with one another to do ministry. Adoption, Fostering and partnerships among strong churches and struggling churches will need to happen on an increasing basis. We anticipate closures will pick up at the end of 2021 and early 2022.
